14k Gold

“We are all star stuff, and our jewelry is colliding-star stuff,” says Edo Berger, an astronomer with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.

Formed billions of years ago from the collision of two ultra-dense neutron stars, gold was first gathered by humans near rivers in Asia Minor such as the Pactolus in Lydia. Gold mining starting as early as 2000 BCE - first by the Egyptians and later by Romans in Africa, Portugal and Spain.

The Museum's handmade jewelry uses solid 14 karat gold and semi-precious gemstones.
