In Greek Mythology, Queen Niobe had some 14 children before arrogantly boasting to Leto about her fertility, and declaring herself superior to the later.
Leto's progeny - the devine twins Apollo and Artemis - get word of these insults and (in retaliation) summarily dispatch all 14 of Niobe's children with arrows dipped in poison.
