The Fu Dog - or more formally the Imperial Guardian Lion - evokes protection according to the practice of feng shui. They serve as a symbol of family wealth and social status and are often placed in front of wealthy homes. They can also decorate Imperial palaces, temples, and government offices.
Traditionally they are deployed in pairs. A male Fu Dog faces left, which signifies control over his domain and protection of his home. A female Imperial Guardian Lion faces right to signify her strong maternal protective instincts.
These qing dynasty antique Fu Dogs were created using a repose technique (hand hammerer from the reverse side) in silver and offered in a variety of shapes and sizes. About 2.5" wide.

Each unique design in our collection is an original work of art, influenced by a historical piece, artifact, or antique in a Museum or private collection.
Made by Hand
Every beautiful work we craft is hand-made by master artistans - shaped, detailed and embellished using the same age-old techniques as have goldsmiths and lapidaries through the ages.
Materials You Can Feel Good About
Recycled metals. Conflict free diamonds and natural gemstones sourced directly from the mines. We've taken great care to create a supply chain that we feel good about, so you can too.
My foo dog lions are both male because they are holding balls. Females have a cub under one foot. I will display one in my curio cabinet and one I will gift to my mom to be sewn as an ornament on a hat. They could be reworked into necklaces. They are genuine antiques. I'm not sure if they were originally buttons or ornaments for hats or belts or textiles, but they could be strung on a cord.
I absolutely love this review because I'm learning fu dogs are gendered. I'll be more careful to send a non-matching pair in the future :).
Shashi (dad) was a prolific collector of all things jewelry, but Chinese artifacts held a special place in his heart. I'm not entirely sure what the ones in our collection were originally intended for, I know that they were collected in Beijing and, though quite uniform, are available in a ton of different patterns. I think these pieces were originally stamped or hammered silver sheet.
