Vintage Shashi Carnelian Butterfly Lovers Earrings

A Chinese legend, The Butterfly Lovers is the story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. In this Eastern Romeo and Juliet style tale, the pair falls in love but is unable to be together. Liang dies heartbroken, and Zhu ultimately throws herself in his grave on her wedding day, and the pair emerge as butterflies.

Sterling silver over carnelian stone, each side of these earrings is engraved with a butterfly to remind us of Liang and Zhu. 925 sterling silver with granulated french hook ear-wire. size: 2 inches including ear-wires.

The Shashi jewelry offered here is vintage unused stock from the 1970's and 1980's. The pieces were designed by the Shashi Singapuri, crafted by hand, and were part of a line featured on the cover of vogue (quite a handful of times) and numerous other fashion magazines.
